I've learned the hard way.....I now let stacks of branches of Tithonia diversifolia (Tree Marigold, Bolivian Sunflower, etc.) sit in the sun for a month to try to be sure they are dead before I use them in my sheet composting, else they root and consume the garden. They decay quickly as a very reliable humus former.
