Great Summer Crops For Tampa

IF their water needs can be met, these subtropical and tropical crops may be planted now to insure food abundance this summer into fall. Of course they flourish best in soil that is biologically active and pH balanced to between 6.0 and 7.0, the more organic matter the better.
Papaya (easy from seeds from a ripe fruit in spring)
Eggplant
Okra
Molokhiya
Chaya (perennial)
Moringa
"Cow Pea" (Vigna unguiculata)
Hot Peppers (especially Capsicum frutescens)
Luffa
Cucusa (Lagenaria species)
True Yams (Dioscorea species)
Sweet Potatoes (Ipomoea can be functionally perennial)
Moringa (perennial)
Chayote
Hyacinth Bean
Velvet Bean
Opuntia cochenillifera
Calabaza pumpkins (Cucurbita moschata)

  1. Hi John,

I hope you don't mind, but I linked to this post on the Temple Terrace Community Garden Facebook page. Hopefully it will send some people your way.

Also, we're setting up a community garden in Temple Terrace! The city is strangely supportive, and they're giving us a chunk of park to set up in. We're going to do the standard raised bed individual plot layout, but each gardener will have control over their own plot. Maybe some could incorporate your Water-Wise gardening on that level?

    Hope all is well.
    Thanks
    Travis
