Turns out that one "White Potato Onion" from Texas had in fact become EIGHT and they separated effortlessly so I am expecting little if any transplant shock in the three 1 gallon pots I put them in for three friends. I planted the two remaining ones about a foot apart in the 18 gallon Water Wise Container Garden that I had just planted the Chipilin in so at a glance I will be able to tell if they re-replicate in that new location. As someone who can't cook without onions I feel that they, my strain of Allium fistulosum and the Allium canadense that I got a few years ago from Mary Jo Clark, might have me very close to my goal of no longer needing to buy yellow onions from the store.
