Seeking Giant Timber Bamboo

My Dad has a low lying wet property in Okeechobee and wants to try growing the giant diameter bamboo......does anyone know of a local source of a plant of it I can buy for him? Thanks, John

  1. John,

I believe the bamboo retailers are south of here, in the Bradenton/Sarasota area.

But I could probably dig you a local shoot or two, if you wanted to start that way, rather than with a potted clump.

  5. Wow Jim, I stepped onto my front porch as my students left and found that pot with those lovely huge rooted clumps of timber bamboo....THANKS! I called Dad right away and you made his day. How in the world did you sever them from the mother plant?! I'm potting them up pronto to bring in tonight as 34 is forecast for south Tampa. Please call me so we can meet up so I can give you seeds/plants/a chicken in gratitude. Again, thanks from me and Dad! John 813 839 0881

  6. Ah, glad you found them! You're welcome. I hope they take off for you. I'm thinking they should root and sprout easily, given a little time. And the right conditions, of course, whatever those may be! :^) (Actually, I was surprised how dry it was digging them up, especially given the rains we've had.)

Enjoy. I'm sure I'll catch up with you again in the near future.

    Jim
