I waited over a week to be sure this is true, at least for THIS rooster of mine after years of caring for him and one before him (I ate the six others).....at sundown I take him out of the hen house and close it, then put him in a dog travel cage in the garden shed, cover the cage with a big piece of cloth then shut the door to prevent my neighbors from being woken up. I let him out each morning around 11. This has worked great for years now and I've shared this with people. But over a week ago I accidentally forgot to cover the door of the cage with the fabric...and now, I guess because of some sunlight entering his cage, he barely crows at all! When the empty lot next door soon sports a new house with new neighbors after being empty for years, this should greatly reduce even his crows suppressed by the shed. A lot of us want a rooster so as to make more chickens for meat and eggs but regret it when a "hen" turns out to be a rooster, so I wanted to share this new angle on suburban rooster keeping.

I planted about two months ago these "shallots" from south Tampa's DoBond Market (they were imported from China) as true shallots are taller than wide....these were wider than tall, something said of the sub-species called "potato onions". I planted each one individually, but already they are dividing like crazy. In a few months when (if) the tops die back I might know if in fact I got "red potato onions".

Wow, just as the websites predicted....even though my Scarlet Mombin (Spondias purpurea) is a tropical tree my Dad grew up with in Coconut Grove it still went leafless. I was taking clothes off the clothesline a while ago when I glanced at the tree...there are HUNDREDS of buds and blooms all over it! Last year was the first year it flowered and I got like seven DELICIOUS fruits (to me they tasted like peach and strawberry), but unless I get a freeze this year I will have SO many fruits to enjoy and share. Here are just a few branches! It is a very thirsty tree so I planted it in THE largest "Water Wise Container Garden" I've ever made along with a banana and other cool plants...years ago it was a huge chest deep swimming pool I could swim two body lengths in now filled hugelkulture style with tree limbs that people dropped off here, manure, leaves, etc. (Back when it had water I went under with my machete and punctured the lining about 15 inches from the bottom all around it). It roots VERY easily so I will make more to grow here and share. I am psyched! The fruit pics are from last summer.
