For years I grew 'Sweet 100' and was very pleased, but this year I grew just ONE plant of its descendant, 'Supersweet 100' and daily I am getting far more fruits than I can eat. Excellent flavor too. I grew the vine in a Water Wise Container Garden I made from a discarded Tampa recycle bin and made the hugelkultur soil from various things in my yard, including dried chicken poop. Since it is "indeterminate" the vine is rampant. Even though hybrids don't breed true from seeds, I am going to process and save quite a few to sow this fall out of curiosity.

Supper is a HUGE salad of leaves of broccoli, Hong Vit radish, Pasja, two kinds of onions, Giant Red mustard plus young carrots, Supersweet 100 cherry tomatoes, and nasturtium blooms topped with bleu cheese crumbles, red wine vinegar and olive...yup another hellish winter day in south Tampa. How DO I endure this?

Paul Zmoda of the Tampa Rare Fruit Council is brilliant, obsessive AND has spent years studying and collecting grapes for Florida, and his business creates vineyards for his clients. He makes various wines, and this year won a bronze medal for a wine at the state fairgrounds. That said, he feels quite certain that my longstanding mystery "Gray Street Grape" is NEITHER of my two best guesses....Vitis aestivalis or 'Conquistador'. Instead, Vitis shuttleworthii, or MAYBE a hybrid of it, is the real ID. Native to the area which helps explain the insane vigor (plus a part of its root zone is beneath the hen house that it shades!) Here is a pic of Paul at my 60th birthday party last August plus some pics of "Gray Street Grape" and his wines. I've got cuttings chilling in the fridge per his request to give him at the next RFC meeting.
