I was asked by a member of the Barefoot Gardener's forum my recipe for arugula pesto....

My answer:

I don't really have a recipe as I never measure....I think I do this each time:

Big fistful of arugula in blender

Big fistful of Lesbos basil leaves in blender

maybe a cup of sunflower seeds or pecans

sea salt

a ton of garlic

pour in extra virgin olive oil from Big Lots, blend until it is a thick puree'.

Occupy Potluck Tampa

This Sunday, November 6, at the Curtis Hixon protest site there will be a community potluck from 2-5 PM. Since the folks who spend the nights there are eating a lot of processed foods I will bring fresh greens, fresh citrus, hard boiled eggs, and a hearty stir fry. They ask that dishes be labelled for vegans, folks with allergies etc. It will be nice to hang out with fellow Occupiers again and to see the overnighters enjoying live, wholesome real foods, like kefir and kombucha tea and dried seaweed and salads, especially from our own farms and gardens and kitchens. I will have with me some envelopes of some great seeds I want to share with gardeners I know, or that I meet there.

I gather that the Mayor and Lt. Governor visited them today and that it went well. I hope to see you Sunday.

Remembering One Of My Seven Rooster Slaughters To Date

It is all still SO intense for me...no wonder I keep procrastinating on my first Muscovy Duck kill. But I am healthiest by FAR when I am an omnivore who eats a few small pieces of meat weekly, (long time friends are SO glad I stopped being a vegetarian in 1998 or so) yet wish to stop buying factory farmed animals' flesh. So I need to "man up" and deal. I think these pics are from my second rooster slaughter, a very large very mean Barred Rock. The pic of the roasted rooster is of rooster number five in this ongoing process that for me is powerful, disturbing, yet vital to my evolution as an urban farmer determined to fully Occupy my life.
